On Brian's Blog today we have posted the possible staggered time schedule for 2008-2009 school year. This is ultimately the boards decision. To see if your school is proposed for a later start time, check out the post by utilizing this link http://brianhornback.blogspot.com/2008/06/knox-county-schools-may-i...
Tomorrow evening at West High School the Knox County Schools will host an overview of school finance and the FY 2009 Budget request at 6:00 p.m. in the school's auditorium. The school is located at 3300 Sutherland Ave.
I would just add that I believe my dissatifaction with the board's actions (regarding rezoning) comes from; one, the school was built in the wrong location to begin with, and that, indeed, Farragut students should make up the bulk of those moving to Hardin Valley and that didn't happen.
It did feel as if more families in more districts were to be inconvenienced to spread the dissatisfaction so no one board member was inordinately effected adversely by the rezoning and naturally the angry parents that come with it.
I certainly could be wrong in that, and am also certain that I don't know all the particulars that go into rezoning. Just as with the yearly school calendar decisions, my hope is for a more open communication with the community prior to decisions being made (by the administration or board) so that the public has a better understanding and more input to the decisions that ultimately are made.
And if rezoning effects only a certain area of the county don't spread it out to alleviate the heat one or two board members may experience. Take responsibility for where you put the school and the students closest to it need to go there. It certainly doesn't make sense to send Bearden students that are a couple of miles from Bearden seven miles to West just to spread the "ire" of citizens. Again, I understand that that will not be the position the board takes on why rezoning was done the way it was, but it certainly is the perception of a great many parents and students.
It's on hold for this year but could be readdressed as a "cost saving" option for future school budgets. If they pursue this, they need to give it the same study they did the school calender. This would be a major lifestyle shift for families, business, and the schools.
