School Matters

A discussion of education in East Tennessee

My son just told me that they "aren't allowed to give extra credit anymore." Is this a policy?

I do not know about policy but my children have been offered extra credit for bringing in food, class supplies, etc. nothing to do with subject being taught/studied. I do not agree with that "policy" will not help my children in the real world to get extra 5-10 points and not being related to the lessons being studied.

I have not heard about any new policy that stops teachers from giving extra credit, and I teach part-time at a Knox County High school.

As a parent, I agree that bringing in kleenex, etc should not be extra credit. I would like to see all grades related to learning the required material.

As a teacher, I usually only give extra credit that relates to the lesson being taught. And the extra credit is usually higher thinking and problem solving related to the subject being taught. Furthermore, extra credit is only accepted if the student completes the assigned homework due for the chapter. Extra credit in my classroom cannot take the place of not doing homework or other assignments.
