School Matters

A discussion of education in East Tennessee

This was in one of the Neighborhood Advisory newsletters that I get regularly.

6. NEIGHBORHOOD TIP: SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SCHOOLS

Here in the Office of Neighborhoods, we often hear talk about the relationship between the quality of public schools and the vitality of Knoxville*s neighborhoods.

Everyone recognizes that the quality of a public school - and/or the reputation of that school - can have a significant impact on the stability of a neighborhood, its housing values, and its quality of life.

But what about the positive impact that a neighborhood can have on a school?

At least one neighborhood group - Colonial Village Neighborhood Association in South Knoxville - takes its role very seriously. One of CVNA*s goals is to support Mooreland Heights Elementary School *in any way that we can,* according to CVNA President Chip Barry.

Barry is in regular contact with the Mooreland PTA president, and thus was able to act quickly when she asked for help to beautify school grounds in advance of the first day of school.

Through the CVNA group e-mail list, Barry this week urged his neighbors to show up at the school -with yard tools - on Saturday morning, Aug. 8, from 9-11 a.m. Neighbors who respond to the PTA request will receive more than coffee, doughnuts and dirt under their fingernails: They will also get the satisfaction of knowing they are strengthening the all-important bond between neighborhood and school.

We know there are other examples of this neighborhood-to-school outreach. Please send them to us at neighborhoods@cityofknoxville.org for future publication. Or call Martha Howell at 215-3456.

Question: Do you think that the individual neighborhoods where our schools are located do enough to support their schools? Do you have specific examples of successes and specific examples of failures? How can we get our neighborhoods (and/or neighborhood associations) to be more proactive to support our schools?

What a great way to be involved! Congrats to that neighborhood and others who are reaching out. I have passed this info on to our neighborhood leaders and hope that we are able to participate in such a great way as well.
