There are dozens of papers like this one that explain the reasons for test adaptation. I just don't think the concept ever caught on and am surprised to see it reappear. The Chitling Test was an attempt to point out that tests are culturally biase...

I don't want to go digging through my old files to find my copy of the Chitling Test, but wasn't the theory behind it something that lost popularity in the 1990's?

Look at this chart and be sure to notice the percentage of students taking the test. On the same site, there is an explanation of how the scores are determined for individual students. I doubt if any of our schools are small enough for outliers wi...

So, pre-k has a "unique effect" until second grade? That sounds like it helps with Kindergarten & First Grade. Seems like we should be figuring out how to help at-risk First and Second Grade students now. I certainly hope politicians aren't eager ...

What about band boosters? I know they are quoted in the article, but they seem to be a parent group and not a Knox County group.

site maintenance

Late tonight, School Matters will be unavailable as Ning does some behind the scenes site maintenance. Don't worry. We'll be back up and running tomorrow morning. Sunday's News Sentinel editorials should give you plenty to think about while waiting for School Matters to return. If that doesn't inspire your opinions and ideas, think about the following.

The Knox County Board Of Education will conduct an extended work session from Sunday, Oct. 14 through Monday, Oct. 15 at the Dancing Be

Cathy, why do we have to join each high school's discussion group in order to find the paragraph pertaining to your tour? The only other way to see them is through your personal School Matters page. I know my husband was frustrated because after seeing the print edition and then coming to School Matters, he couldn't find the write up anywhere.

Hi Kathy. While I think the discussion about travel for teachers or board members is a good one, I do want to clarify something in your original post. You stated that some of the board members went on a trip to China almost two years ago.( As far as I know no board members have ever traveled internationally on tax payer funds. I went to China two summers ago. This was a trip that I found through my research. The trip was funded by me ($1,000) and the rest was awarded through an organization that was promoting relations between China and other countries. ZERO United States tax dollars, local, state or federal were used for this trip.
Thanks,
Karen

Anytime you have a PTA issue (please remember PTA and PTO are not the same, all PTAs are connected at the local, state and national level, PTOs are school-based organizations) please feel free to contact me.

Cathy,

I read with much sorrow your comments on how you and your family were treated by the PTA. Being an active PTA member for many years (more years than I will readily admit, my eldest is 20, let's just leave it at that) and a current Tennessee PTA officer, I am disheartened hearing that PTA members are not willing to uphold what we work so hard to acheive. We continue to lobby to have IDEA fully funded, we constantly monitor legislation that effects children and families and work to inform our membership in a timely manner so they can be involved, we work closely with schools such as Ft. Sanders (they have a small but extremely commited PTA) to ensure all children have access to what they need. We truly believe in speaking for all children, no matter the need, no matter the circumstance, no matter the family situation with a very loud and collective voice to make certain that all children are provided with support, supplies, clothing, services, education designed to help them reach their potential and more. We work to give parents a voice, information on how they can help their child be successful and educate parents and families on issues and topics related to the whole child, not academics alone. I am so very sorry you had such a negative experience, please let me know if I can help you in any way.

kids were evacuated to the playground, then called parents from the preschool building (old house next door to school). Everyone seemed calm. Jake called Faith, then Faith called me. She said news trucks were there, but I first saw it online at VolunteerTV.com. Ironic, because WATE is across the street.
