"Inventing New Boundaries" at the K12 Online Conference 2007

The K-12 Online Conference 2007 began today with a preconference keynote by educator and technology advocate David Warlick. If you are curious about effective and meaningful technology integration into our classrooms, this conference is a good way to explore with minimal time investment and zero expense!

Conference organizers are utilizing a variety of applications familiar to School Matte…

Leaving "competition" behind

Cross-posted at ThinkTime

I've been steeping in a brew of educational conversation this week -- first at a meeting on Monday afternoon in which board members, school personnel, and community leaders debated the future of the Great Schools Partnership and then tonight at a gathering in which Sallee Reynolds outlined an ambitious curriculum design for…

Jennifer, I thought I would respond to one of your quesitons here. The School Matters moderators plan to meet with KCSB/KCS to tell them more about the site and that we need their expertise/particpation in order to make this not only a discussion site but an action site.

Hi Jennifer! Great to see you on School Matters. By the way -- I did take Eva to the First Day celebration, but the GSP table was empty by the time we got there. Hope to meet you once Eva is back in school!

Beth & Jennifer,We need high energy, innovative teachers like you at all of our schools. The job-sharing policy, which I initially proposed when I first came on the Board, is only for tenured teachers, but part-time should be open to any certified teacher. Job-sharing is a more nuanced thing where two teachers share one k-5 class. At the 6-12 level part-time teaching doesn't require nearly as much coordination. It should be at the discretion of the principal, as is all hiring, but if the principal thinks you'd be a good fit even if only part-time, then it should be allowed. We can't afford to offer benefits to part-time teachers, but that should be an area where we compare favorably to the private sector since so many teachers have family obligations. Offering part-time flexible work schedules should be a significant way for us to attract and retain talented people. If you hear differently from HR, let me know. Perhaps we need to re-visit the policy.

Jennifer, I'll be your 'friend' but only if you get a happier photo of yourself!

After attending the SB workshop last night and listening to Sallee Reynolds plan for the new HS, you sound like the type of person she would want to hire! I too am a Language Arts teacher looking to teach part time. Sadly, because I have taught out of state ( I am licensed to teach in TN) and don't have tenure here, the Board's policy is to only let tenured teachers teach part time. Hopefully that can be changed so that I can get back in the classroom, yet still be able to be home when my kids get off the bus. I would love to be on the HV team.
