Biology class is a great place to discuss prenatal nutrition and could be discussed a few hours each year. Health class is another. Family economics is very relevant. Could be done in math classes, finance, economics. May already be being done, I ...

I don't see why they could not. The issue is with sex ed people freak & think their kids are being taught how to have sex, instead of the physiology of what happens when you make that choice. From my perspective the school board would have that co...

Vic one area this could be addressed is by strengthening health departments & the evil sex ed. In community health this quarter in college I've had the privilege of doing clinicals at health departments around the region. I believe Knox County no ...

When ever a child is evaluated for a learning disability, there needs to be AT LEAST two instruments, as I understand it. This means TCAP alone is not sufficient. The fact that she has siblings with LDs is a major flag for her. She may be so intel...

rebuttal of recent vaccines discussion

it was said in a recent discussion :If you didn't believe 100% that vaccinations caused autism, what you are doing would be morally reprehensible because you stand to make a lot of money yourself, don't you?The statement about my standing to make a lot of money from my family's claim in federal vaccine court is erroneous, offensive, and just ignorant. For those who do not know, every single vaccine that is under federal vaccine court's guise has a fee that each and every one of us pay wit… Continue

Thoughts on new Special Education Director Melissa Massie

It's been what, about 3 months since Ms. Massie took over as Special Education Director? I was open about the profound displeasure with Dr. McCook's tenure, so I wanted to take a minute and congratulate Ms. Massie. I have heard some very positive comments about her leadership.I have not had any IEP meetings for my own child since she took over, at least I don't think so! But several of my friends have, and this is what I'm hearing. The cloud of doom and fear that seemed to hover over administrat… Continue

Recent Vaccine-Autism Case

I would imagine some of you have heard the news of the past 24 hours or so regarding the case of little Hannah Poling developing autism from vaccines & the government's concession. What you're not hearing is the entire story. My husband laughed at my ignorant thought that the news media would actually report the story as factual. I think my favorite report was NBC's constant emphasis of autism SYMPTOMS.

Please let me clarify: Hannah Poling has autism. Autism, in its most simple form, i

Itemized statements per student

I've participated in several lively discussions recently regarding the myth that special education students take resources from the general ed population. It got me thinking. How cool would it be if we received an itemized statement at the end of each school year showing exactly how much was allocated for each child, sped and general ed alike, and where the money went.

I know with hospitalizations now ANYTHING you get has a bar code that goes on a sheet of paper, and from that the hosp… Continue

National Autism Association Friday's notes

I had the extreme honor of attending the NAA conference in Atlanta. Some have asked about autism, thought this might help explain some of the issues we parents are dealing with. I did have the extreme honor of speaking to Dr. Andrew Wakefield, as well as telling Jenny McCarthy about TN's dismal services, particularly early intervention. Her jaw dropped open as I explained what we do not have.

Friday morning. The first speaker was Katie Wright. She was very clear in

Debi I have no idea. Do you want to forward those links to Mr. Whipple or Mrs. Lackey for consideration? I would LOVE to see a new playground before our children move on from NES.

Hi Debi,I am working on a story for the News Sentinel about the parent portal. I saw that you were involved with some discussions on here about it earlier. Would you be willing to to speak with me? Give me a call at 865-771-2298 or 865-816-3576 or let me know a good time to call you. I really appreciate your help.Jessie

Hey, have you heard or watched the documentary called Autiam: The Musical. I did not get to watch it. I read a lot of reviews though. It kind of sheds a light on how kids with Autism are not getting their talents utilized well enough. And how school systems are not really helping matters. I know all of these issues have been brought up before. This documentary might change people's blinded views about children with Autism.

Do you support Jenny Mcarthy's Generation Rescue. I have heard a lot of different things about it.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, "typical peer" equates to non-disabled. You are right, there can often be the one bad egg. KCS doesn't seem to want to do anything to address the social aspects of inclusive education, at least from my experience. I hope there are good stories out there. I've been blessed so far, the kids have been very supportive of my daughter, but she's still young. The escort to the bathroom I'm referring to is what the mom of a sixth grader, typical student, told me. She told me this during the 06-07 school year. According to her, ANY child at Northwest was required to have an escort to the bathroom, but she might have been mistaken. I know enough to know you can't believe everything said from everyone, that's why it's nice to communicate with other parents to find the truth.

Well, I know for a fact that children (and even adults really) tend to shy away from those that are different from themselves, either in intellect, physical type, or even just social status. It appears to be human nature to self segregate to a certain extent, and this self segregation does often lead to one group making fun of another. So if you mean non-disabled students when you say "typical peer" then I will say this: Most students will not make a blatant joke at your child's expense, but you can bet that there will alway be at least one person out there in the world that will feel pleased with themselves for making someone else look bad, this a flaw in that person, not the object of their ridicule.

I would not look for Knox County to enact any sensitivity training specifically regarding the disabled, but, I would, if I were you, make sure that they are covering it in the school regulations, and if someone violates those regulations, it should be made plain to the offender that their actions have consequences, which I think should include sensitivity training.

As to the escort to the restroom, I would hope that it is done on a case by case basis, allowing the higher functioning students access to the lavatory unsupervised, so long as long as they do not pose a danger to themselves or others. However, if there is concern for their safety of the student, whether from themselves or other students, I'm all for an escort. For an actual answer on this, I would check directly with your child's teacher and go from there.

Talk to you later

Thanks,

TQ

I read your comment and it worries me. Are your child's needs being met at Northwest? Basically, I guess I want to know, what, if anything they could improve on. Let me know, ok?Thanks,
TQ
