site maintenance

Late tonight, School Matters will be unavailable as Ning does some behind the scenes site maintenance. Don't worry. We'll be back up and running tomorrow morning. Sunday's News Sentinel editorials should give you plenty to think about while waiting for School Matters to return. If that doesn't inspire your opinions and ideas, think about the following.

The Knox County Board Of Education will conduct an extended work session from Sunday, Oct. 14 through Monday, Oct. 15 at the Dancing Be

keep parents informed

Getting text messages from my teenagers when their school has been evacuated for a bomb threat or is under lock-down is frightening, but I take comfort in the knowledge of what is happening. When our elementary school is evacuated or goes into lock-down mode, I usually hear about it through the blog grapevine. This is less comforting, but I still feel better than I do when I hear after t… Continue

No grape throwing

I give this woman points for perseverance, but her choice of protest seems like something you would expect from a middle schooler and not a grown adult. The tone of the board member quoted in the article makes me think they still weren't listening. Do you feel like your input has any effect on decisions made by your school board member? Your PTA/PTO? If they are listening, what do they hear? Meetings, e-… Continue

Flippant Friday

A University in Texas believes the solution to "the collapse of the American family and society" which ties directly to parental involvement in schools and adolescent delinquency is to teach women household skills. The curriculum which is designed to teach women abou… Continue

We're ALL education advocates

Cumberland Education Advocates asks if we are willing to give more money to schools? I ask if we can do more in other ways as well? Donating supplies? Spending more time in the school helping? Teaching our skills and expertise? Getting more businesses to sponsor schools? Are we doing our best?

Or - do you think you've done your share and other people need to step up? What if they can't or won't? How w… Continue

Could you walk to school?

In the UK, there have been proposals to discourage car riders and encourage walkers. While I don't see this as a possibility here, I wonder how many families drive when they could walk. At our Kindergarten parent meeting last night I heard two mothers who live in the neighborhood directly behind the school commenting that they were both prefer driving their students for comfort reasons. Unless people created walking paths between h… Continue

Hello Members!

Every time a new member joins School Matters, I hop over and read the information they provide about themselves. Then, I play six degrees in my head. Do I know that person? What is their school or community? Who do I know there? I like the idea that real live people who really care are reading, posting and commenting on School Matters in East TN. You know what els… Continue

$1.95 fee ?

I was really excited about our upcoming ability to make online payments for school lunches until I was told that it will cost $1.95 for each transaction. That means it will cost my family about $8 every time I use it. I can send cash or pay by check for free. Very disappointing.

Did you choose your school?

After reading this thread and the comments in this thread, I am curious if you chose your school or just accepted whatever you are zoned to attend. I know that people consider the zoned school when they shop for a home, but as we've all learned, zones change. If you chose your school, was it based… Continue

school bus safety

The year has barely begun and there are already reports of school bus accidents. The stories never fail to make me feel sick even though I know that statistically, there are far more cars in accidents than school buses. It doesn't help me feel any better when I see cars ignoring the school bus "stop" sign. I am still trying to convince… Continue

things children need to succeed

I just read an article listing ten things children need to succeed in school. Although my children have extremely different personalities and different learning styles, I think we're doing okay on everything except (#8) following routines. We seriously need to get our back to school groove back. In our schools, I worry about (#4) emotional and social skills. I wonder how many children never learn to interact and sp… Continue
