School Matters

A discussion of education in East Tennessee

I've participated in several lively discussions recently regarding the myth that special education students take resources from the general ed population. It got me thinking. How cool would it be if we received an itemized statement at the end of each school year showing exactly how much was allocated for each child, sped and general ed alike, and where the money went.

I know with hospitalizations now ANYTHING you get has a bar code that goes on a sheet of paper, and from that the hospital bill is created. I remember a KCS teacher once telling me she had to account for how many hours each student spent in her presence throughout the school year. Seems like it wouldn't be that difficult to create such a statement. Of course, the school would run the very real risk of having to put to death the mythological "special ed student resource hog" that does not exist.

I don't have a SPED child but I would LOVE to know where all this money for schools / students goes and exactly how much is spent on my child vs. others.

That would obviously show up in the statement! That's what's cool about, full disclosure & accountability. I'm so sick of being told my SPED kid, that isn't getting near all her sped dollars allocated, is costing so much. Bull, put the money where the mouth is & prove it. They can't, it doesn't exist.

Funny. Can I get a credit for all the years my child had no textbooks? Or for the year spent with a substitute teacher who just gave him worksheets every day?
