School Matters

A discussion of education in East Tennessee

Last fall at a Knox County Board of Education meeting we played the video “Shift Happens”. This year an updated version was played at West High School’s Open House. The brief video is entitled, “Did You Know” and can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMcfrLYDm2U I hope you will take the time to view this. It does a good job of showcasing some of the differences that exist in our world today and stimulates thinking of how our education system must change to meet the needs of our children and youth.

Hey, everyone, I've been meaning to post this link to Karl Fisch's blog: http://thefischbowl.blogspot.com/2007/09/did-you-know-20-additional-quotes-and.html

Fisch is the original creator of "Shift Happens," which started out as a PowerPoint presentation to prompt discussion among the faculty at his high school in Colorado. The presentation went viral all over the edTech online community last spring, and, as you already know, made its way to Knox County! (The librarian at Fulton High School sent the link to me, which is how I first encountered it.)
Well, now Fisch has made available, by request, a text version of his presentation (which is kinda funny if you think about the fact that the presentation is about breaking away from traditional pen-and-paper approaches).
Anyway, what I find interesting in Fisch's latest post are the quotes and questions that didn't make the final presentation because of time constraints. He lists them for anyone who might want to use them as conversation starters in their own community. As a teacher, I like Will Richardson's quote: "We are moving from 'do your own work' to 'work with others.' 'Just in case' to 'just in time' learning,
'hand it in' to 'publish it.'"

Karen, I recall the board showing another version of this "Did You Know?" video at one of your regular (voting) board meetings recently. Was it in April?.

That one related to how the U.S. compares (and will compare) to other countries on several important educational measures--and it was quite humbling!

Do you remember? Could you possibly link that one for us sometime soon, too?

Meanwhile, what a novel--and marvelous--idea to supply laptops to those children in developing countries where the public education system might not support students beyond the fifth grade. I was stunned by the simplicity of possibly opening so many doors that way! Hope!

Sorry about the "posted by me" at the end. I don't know how to edit that to have my name there instead!
