Middle Schoolers riding elementary buses

Does anyone know why Middle Schoolers are not allowed to ride elementary buses? In theory, I understand why (a Junior riding w/a Kindergartener), but a girl in our neighborhood used to ride the early bus so she could study in the library. My oldest has started Jazz Band and rehearsals are at 7:45 M,W,F mornings. The Middle and Intermediate schools are on the same campus and share the same bus drop off. He was told he can't ride the early bus. Is it due to overcrowding? Is it the age thing? I hav… Continue

Drumroll Please, Announcing: Hardin Valley Academy!!!

I was going to post this on the Hardin Valley group, but it has ramifications for all high schools in the county. Sallee Reynolds presented her team's plan for the new school in Hardin Valley tonight at the School Board's workshop. This plan, if the Board approves it, will not only be used at Hardin Valley , but could serve as a model for the other 12 high schools in Knox County where these programs would be implemented at a later date. For example, now Austin East has a Finance Academy-some of… Continue

School security and police

In this morning's KNS, there was an article discussing how some school systems are beginning their own police departments instead of employing contract security personnel and working with local police departments. How secure are our schools in your opinion? Would you like to see Knox County Schools have its own police department? Where would funding come from? Would this be at the expense of some classroom monies? Would it be worth it? Would a school system's own department free up local law enf… Continue

Teacher postings

Is there a more efficient way to post your child's teacher? Every year, we all make the mad dash to the school to see the classes posted and if a school supply list exits. This year, with three kids, I made three different trips on three different days to find out who my childrens' teachers would be. Only one school (Farragut Middle-thank you!) posted pods and the school supply list before the tax free holiday. Farragut Primary did post the school supply list on the Knox Co. website, but it is a… Continue

I am paying close attention to the Hardin Valley plans; it's exciting stuff! My hope is to return to the classroom within the next year or so. And, as a new mom, I would love to job share! I had not heard the stipulation in board policy about only tenured folks being able to work part time.I would be happy to explore this issue with you.
