Earlier School Calendar v. Save TN Summers

In today's (09/02/07) News Sentinel, in the Perspectives section, an article entitled, Starting Time, written by George Ashe, a Knox County educator and Assistant Principal at Hardin Valley High School (soon to be Hardin Valley Academy) responds to the debate of starting the school calendar later in the year.

We're No.5! (on OBESITY that is)

In today's (08/28/07) Knoxville News Sentinel, there is an article on the front page that states Tennessee is 5th in the country for obesity. In the Sentinel's Sunday, August 12th paper, there was an article describing a study that had come out in the latest issue of the journal Obesity finding that obese students missed more days of school than their peers. Additionally it reported some troubling statistics. "Nationally, obesity rates have nearly quintupled among 6- to 11-year olds…

Save Our Summers

As Legislative Rep for West Hills Elem, I have been sent emails about the Save Our Summers campaign. There are many parents who are trying to push the start date of school back to late August or early September. There have been recent articles about this issue. On 08/27/07 in the Knoxville News Sentinel's Shopper section an article was written highlighting parents in our community concerned about the start date.

There are valid arguments on both sides and I have urged those involved to…

Very cool to see you at CAC today. I look forward to the experience and all that each person is bringing to the table. I am sure that as we go through the process that it will inspire lively thoughts and conversations that we can share here!

Elaine, this is so cool! I have never been in a chat room b/f, so this is all new to me!
Do you think there is mold at our school? I read your comments abou mold at Farragut. Have we had any issues at West hills?

On Monday, August 7, 2007, Interim Superintendent Mullins included in the budget 4 new nursing staff positions (1RN and 3LPNs). Board Chair Karen Carson stated that a plan should be devised to hire an additional 22 nursing positions within the next 3-4 years which would bring the ratio of nurses to students to the recommended level of 1:750 by American Nurses Association. I believe that IS Mullins and the Health Services Department are to bring that plan to the board within the next three months.
On Wednesday, August 09, 2007, the board approved the budget for 2007-08 school year which included the nursing positions. As to where they will be placed, when they will be hired or if they are already hired, etc. are questions for the Health Services Deaprtment and I will try to update when that information becomes available. I hope that those answers happen soon because there may be families that make different decisions as to where their child goes to school based upon placement of those nurses.
More importantly, I want to thank those involved in contacting their school board members and letting them know how important our children's safety is to us. They heard.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
